My mission as I travel throughout Latin America is to volunteer with rescue animals in each country that I visit. I’ve done this before in Thailand and New Zealand and it’s been a wonderful experience.
Playa Animal Rescue was the first shelter that I would volunteer with – they are based in Playa Del Carmen, Mexico.
It was a fantastic place to start!!
The shelter is home to between 30 -40 dogs and puppies at any one time. On arriving I was impressed by how well kept the shelter was and how much room the dogs had within their individual enclosures.
Playa Animal Rescue works closely with Dogs In Better Spots (DIBS), an animal shelter in Toronto, to have some of the rescued dogs send up there for foster and adoption.
I was a volunteer 3 mornings a week. I joined two other fantastic volunteers, Amanda and Yumiho (who took the photos of me in this post). Our main task was to take all of the dogs out for walks and give them lots of love and attention. When they are this good looking it’s an easy task . . .
Each Saturday the shelter has it’s very own Charm School when people, local or travelling through, are invited to come and spend the morning at the shelter. The dogs love the extra attention and as an extra treat dog-sized swimming pools are filled up for splashing about in.
I try not to have favorites but usually fail! Nico was one of my regular walks and it was wonderful to see the progress he made in socialising with others in the 2 months I was there.
I also fall in love with Mascara and her puppies. I met them when the puppies were young enough to still have their eyes closed and watched them grow into such characters. I miss them . . .

If you are heading to Playa Del Carmen then why not go and make a dog’s day? You can contact the rescue for details via their website.
If you are in Mexico, Canada or the US and are looking to adopt a dog (and maybe fell in love with one of the beauties here) then get in touch with the shelter, I know they’d love to hear from you.
