Meditation is something I’ve flirted with now and then. After reading of its many benefits I wanted to include it as the first thing I do in the morning.

There are many different ways to meditate, with no right or wrong way. There are 3 essential elements that will remain the same no matter which way you choose to meditate:

1. Breathe

2. Clear your mind

3. Focus on the present moment

This is how I currently meditate.

I sit on the floor; either cross legged or on my heels. Once I’m comfortable I’ll close my eyes.

I focus on my breath, ensuring that my exhale is longer than my inhale.

As thoughts come into my mind I let them flow on by rather than getting caught up in them. To assist with this I’ve started to image a scene based on my time on the paradise island of Koh Rong Samloem in Cambodia:

I’m lying in my hammock; listening to the rhythmic sound of the waves and the gentle breeze rustling through the tall trees around me. I ease myself from the hammock and walk down the wooden steps to the sandy path. I feel my feet sink into the warm sand. I move down the path and onto the beach.

I pause for a moment to let the sun’s warmth soak into my skin. Moving forward I step into the crystal clear water. The warm water slides over my skin. I sink into the water and push off. I surge through water; weightless and powerful.

Every time I’ve done this I feel a glow spreading though me and smile covering my face. Now that is a fantastic way to start my day!

Have you ever tried meditation? I’d love to hear from you in the comments below.
